Government meets with World Bank to accelerate energy transition process

The Government represented by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, and the Secretary of State for Finance, Alcindo Mota, met this Monday, February 27, with the World Bank for an articulation meeting on the energy transition process and the privatization of Electra.

According to the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Energy, Cape Verde has the challenge of accelerating the energy transition and that requires the mobilization of technical and financial resources necessary for the execution of the energy plan.

It should be noted that the Energy Transition Support Program is aligned with the country’s energy policy and with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, “to ensure reliable, sustainable, modern and affordable access for all.”

This meeting takes place as part of the mission to support the implementation of the Renewable Energy Project and Improving the Efficiency of Public Services, which runs from February 27 to March 4, with the aim of evaluating the progress made in the implementation of REIUP’s investment and technical assistance activities, and notably those related to them, as well as identifying areas to support the implementation of Cape Verde’s strategy to transition to sustainable, low-carbon electricity production while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. This strategy is underpinned by the Master Plan for the Energy Sector (2018-2040) which sets 54% of the target for RESV penetration by 2030.

Upon completion of the support mission the team led by energy expert Djamali Ibrahime, will present a summary memorandum of the agreements reached that will be shared with the relevant authorities.

Representing the Special Projects Management Unit, the Coordinator, Nuno Gomes, the Renewable Energy and Public Services Efficiency Improvement Project Manager, Daniel Santos, and the Electromechanical Engineer, Izauda Monteiro do Canto, will be accompanying the mission.
