On Thursday morning (27), a workshop was held in Praia, for the dissemination of the Results of the Study of Reading Assessment, EGRA, made from a sample of 2nd grade students, in order to assess the reading proficiency of these students.
EGRA is an international assessment instrument comprising a set of tests that measure reading ability in terms of overall comprehension and fluency of a language.
Based on this international evaluation, the Ministry of Education, through the National Directorate of Education, intends to use the results to support it: in political decision-making; achieve SDG 4.1: by 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete equitable and quality primary and secondary education; to keep all education stakeholders informed about the early reading skills of children across the country; and also to demonstrate to teachers some of the fundamental reading skills that may need more attention in the 2nd year of schooling, as well as to build a solid foundation, in order to be able to carry out similar exercises in the future.
It should be noted that this study was funded by the World Bank through the Enhancing Education and Skills Development Project, under the fiduciary management of the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE). It is a tool for strengthening key competencies in education and for supporting the establishment and operation of a student evaluation system within the ME to accompany and monitor the ongoing educational reform.
On the occasion, the Special Projects Management Unit was represented by the manager of the Strengthening of Education and Skills Development Project, Clarisse Silva.
The project was divided into 3 phases: the first phase, held in January 2022, included the Workshop for the Construction/Development of the EGRA assessment instruments and the contextual questionnaire for 2nd grade students. In the second phase, held in March, data collection was carried out for the pilot study, and finally, in the third phase, the evaluation was applied at a national level, in all municipalities of the country, in schools selected by sampling.
