Today marks the start of the mission to Support the Implementation of the Resilient Tourism and Development of the Blue Economy Project, which will run until September 20 on the islands of Santiago, São Vicente, Sal and São Nicolau. The main objective of this mission is to support the country in the implementation of this project and in the preparation of the second Additional Financing (AF) package.

The official opening of this mission took place on Monday morning (11), and was attended by the National Planning Director, Gilson Pina, the Coordinator of the Special Projects Management Unit, Nuno Gomes, the Project Manager, Aguinaldo Marçal, and teams from the National Planning Directorate and the World Bank.

The objectives of this mission are multifaceted. Firstly, it aims to support Cape Verde in implementing the project, which includes analyzing the implementation of the 2023 work plan that has already been approved, as well as preparing the work plan for 2024. In addition, the mission also sets out to discuss with the main beneficiaries and the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE) the state of play of procurement and the execution of the project’s main activities.

One of the highlights of this mission will focus on the preparation of the second Additional Financing (AF) package for the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project. This crucial process will include assessing progress in prioritizing investments and key discussions on safeguard instruments.

The team led by TTL’s Senior Private Sector Specialist, Cristina Navarrete, has scheduled meetings with various government and municipal stakeholders. These strategic meetings will be led by representatives from the Ministries of Finance and Business Development, the Ministry of Transport and Tourism, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Territorial Planning and Housing, the Ministry of the Sea and the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment.

This mission demonstrates Cape Verde’s commitment to the sustainable development of tourism and the blue economy on its islands, with a focus on the effective implementation of the project and the search for additional funding to continue promoting economic growth and resilience in these crucial sectors.
