World Bank approves 25 million USD loan to Cape Verde for health sector

On December 19, 2023, the World Bank’s Board of Directors approved a credit worth SDR 19.1 million (equivalent to USD 25.0 million) to the Republic of Cape Verde for the health sector. Specifically, the credit will be directed to the Health Security Program in West and Central Africa, Phase I, using the Multiphasic Programmatic Approach (MPA).

 

With the signing of the Project Financing Agreement between the World Bank and the Government of Cape Verde, which is expected soon, the project will become effective and implementation will begin immediately.

 

The announcement of the approval of this credit, under the IDA, was made by the World Bank on Tuesday, January 30.

 

This project aims to increase regional collaboration and the capacities of health systems to prevent, detect and respond to health emergencies in West and Central Africa as a whole, particularly in Cape Verde. It is structured into five main components: (i) Prevention of health emergencies; (ii) Detection of health emergencies; (iii) Responses to health emergencies; (iv) Project management and institutional capacity building; and (v) Contingent emergency response component (CERC).

 

The project will have a national scope, although some activities, which involve the construction/rehabilitation of infrastructure, will be located in specific geographical areas, including, among others: Monte Sossego Health Center, in São Vicente; Achada Igreja Health Center, in São Salvador do Mundo, on the island of Santiago; Cidade Velha Health Center, in Ribeira Grande de Santiago, on the island of Santiago; Santa Catarina do Fogo Health Center, on the island of Fogo; Regional Medicines Depot in the city of Praia, on the island of Santiago; Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in São Vicente; Animal Health Laboratory; Santiago Diagnostic Center.
