The operation is co-financed by a $1.2 million concessional loan and $0.41 million grant from the Canada Clean Energy and Forest Climate Facility (CCEFCF), as well as a $0.4 million reimbursable grant from the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The financing will support Cabo Verde\u00a0to\u00a0accelerate\u00a0its clean energy transition and\u00a0achieve\u00a0universal access to electricity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cabo Verde has made\u00a0significant progress\u00a0in energy access, achieving\u00a098%\u00a0coverage\u00a0and bringing reliable electricity to nearly the entire population.\u00a0The country has\u00a0also\u00a0advanced\u00a0its\u00a0energy transition efforts, aiming for\u00a0100% renewable electricity by 2040, supported by ongoing sector reforms. Meeting the country\u2019s targets\u00a0will require further investment in clean power, improved grid stability, and continued reforms following the demerger of the vertically integrated utility ELECTRA. The approved financing supports these national priorities and is expected to\u00a0leverage\u00a0substantial private capital for large-scale renewable energy deployment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe scaling up of REIUP reinforces Cabo Verde\u2019s ambition to become a leader in\u00a0achieving universal access to electricity in\u00a0Africa. By mobilizing private capital\u00a0to accelerate the energy transition\u00a0and strengthening the sector\u2019s institutional foundations, the project will help ensure a sustainable, financially\u00a0viable, and climate-resilient energy sector\u201d,\u00a0said\u00a0Kwawu\u00a0Mensan\u00a0Gaba, World Bank Energy Global Practice Manager for Western and Central Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The operation will:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Increase renewable energy generation capacity\u00a0by\u00a0supporting the development of 68 MW of new solar PV and wind generation and 12 MWh of battery storage, through a combination of public investments on smaller islands and private sector participation.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the operationalization of a newly established, Government-backed Risk Mitigation Facility, expected to mobilize US$108 million in private capital.<\/li>\n<li>Advance Cabo Verde\u2019s efforts to achieve universal access to electricity through 1,800 additional household connections and last mile electrification.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen and consolidate\u00a0ongoing energy sector reforms and institutional capacity, particularly for newly created entities resulting from the separation of water and power utilities, to improve financial performance, operational efficiency, and reduce commercial losses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith this new operation, we are investing in a cleaner, more affordable energy future for Cabo Verde\u2014one that reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels, shields the economy from the volatility of global price shocks, and strengthens competitiveness.
