UGPE holds workshop on Hospital Waste Management as part of Covid-19 Emergency Response Project

A workshop promoted by the Special Projects Management Unit will be held on August 17 and 18 in Praia, in which key aspects will be analyzed for the preparation and implementation of a Hospital Waste Management Plan in the context of the construction of the Ribeira das Patas, Porto Novo Municipality and Achada do Monte, Calheta São Miguel Municipality Health Centres.

 

This workshop is part of the restructuring of the Covid-19 Emergency Response Project, and aims to clearly and consistently establish short- and medium-term commitments and objectives to ensure that hospital waste management is optimized in existing health structures and in future centers to be built. Various topics linked to Hospital Waste Management will be addressed, such as the competencies and responsibilities of each stakeholder, the definition of operational processes and procedures, as well as the sustainability of the management of the waste treatment chain and specific regulatory instruments.

 

Participating in this session are entities that work in the area of hospital waste management, namely city councils, health structures: the National Institute of Public Health, health regions, health centers, the National Directorate for the Environment, and the National Water and Sanitation Agency, with a view to defining lines of concerted action.

 

The event, which took place this morning, was opened by the UGPE Coordinator, Nuno Gomes, who said in his speech that this meeting is extremely important so that all the institutions involved in this hospital waste management process are aligned with the requirements imposed by the WB. In addition, emphasized the UGPE Coordinator and Covid-19 Emergency Response Project Manager, it is essential to comply with these procedures stipulated by the funder, in order to ensure not only better implementation of the project, but also in this specific case the funding for the construction of the Achada Monte and Ribeiras das Patas Health Centres, concluded the official.

 

Also present at the event were the President of the National Institute of Public Health, Maria da Luz Lima and the General Director of Planning, Budget and Management of the Ministry of Health, Silvino da Luz.

 

It should be noted that the Hospital Waste Management Plan is an essential tool for preventing environmental and public health impacts, and is therefore a requirement of national legislation and various health sector policies and strategies, as well as being a commitment established with the World Bank, as a financier.
