On Wednesday (15), the Special Projects Management Unit held a joint meeting with the National Director of Environment, Dr. Ethel Rodrigues, in order to analyze issues related to environmental and social safeguards of projects funded by international financial institutions, as well as international procedures in this area.
The Coordinator, Nuno Gomes, was accompanied by the Environmental and Social Specialist, Neiva Centeio, and by the managers of the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project, Aguinaldo Marçal, and of the Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Public Services Project, Daniel Santos.
Considering that efficient, effective and inclusive implementations of World Bank funded projects require the integration of environmental and social aspects throughout the project’s life cycle, the engagement of the national environmental authority to ensure compliance with a set of environmental and social safeguard requirements.
In this regard, the intention is to develop a partnership agreement with the objective of aligning national procedures with those of the World Bank and to identify needs to strengthen national capacity in environmental and social safeguards for projects with potential negative impacts on the environment, focusing on projects negotiated by the government of Cape Verde with the World Bank, including the two projects mentioned above.
