UGPE monitors redevelopment works on the Catedral–Misericórdia section in Cidade Velha

The Coordinator of the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE), Nuno Gomes, accompanied by the manager of the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project, Vladimir Fonseca, made a technical visit on February 11 to the redevelopment works on the Catedral–Misericórdia section, in Cidade Velha, as part of the Urban and Environmental Redevelopment Project, financed by the Government of Cape Verde with support from the World Bank, with an investment of over 300 million escudos.
The visit was also attended by the President of the Cultural Heritage Institute (IPC), Ana Samira Baessa, and the Head of the Cidade Velha Management Office, Adalberto Tavares, in a joint action whose main objective was to learn about the progress of the work, as well as to assess the challenges, advances, and deadlines for completion of the project.
The ongoing intervention focuses on the urban redevelopment of this section, with emphasis on the reconstruction of the front walls and the spatial reorganization of the surrounding area, aiming to improve mobility, enhance the built heritage, and reinforce the quality of the public space.

The work is being carried out with systematic archaeological monitoring, ensuring the documentation and safeguarding of the material remains associated with the site, in continuity with the previous excavation carried out in the Misericórdia area, ensuring compliance with heritage conservation parameters.
During the visit, the team toured the areas undergoing intervention, assessing the physical progress of the work and its compliance with the established technical criteria. These interventions constitute a structural milestone in the consolidation of the cultural landscape of Cidade Velha and in strengthening the universal values that underpin its classification as a World Heritage Site.
