Mission to support the implementation of the Renewable Energy and Improved Performance of Public Services Project

Today, November 13, the World Bank began a mission to support the implementation of the Renewable Energy and Improved Utilities Performance Project (REIUP) and the preparation of additional REIUP financing.

During the first meeting with the Government of Cape Verde, represented by the National Planning Director, Gilson Pina, and his team, specific issues relating to the implementation of the project were addressed, and it was clear that the importance of this project for the country was recognized.

The objectives of this mission cover several areas. Firstly, the assessment of progress in the preparation and implementation of the action plan for institutional reform and restructuring of the energy sector, with the support of the CPCS and individual consultants funded by REIUP.

In addition, the mission aims to take stock of technical assistance activities aimed at strengthening the National Public Services Regulatory Agency (ARME) and the planning department of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. It also seeks to identify additional capacity building needs, especially for the newly created institutions.

Another point of focus is assessing the procurement status of REIUP’s investments aimed at the energy transition. The mission will continue to discuss support for the implementation of Cape Verde’s strategy for the transition to low-carbon electricity production. This includes exploring additional REIUP funding to mobilize private sector participation in renewable energy production and grid modernization.
