The First Technical Meeting of the Health Security Program for West and Central Africa (HeSP) was held in Praia from October 1 to 3, with the aim of assessing progress in the prevention, detection and response to health emergencies in the region.
This program is funded by the World Bank and is budgeted at around 170 million dollars and aims to benefit 600 million people in the region, in an integrated approach to human, environmental and animal health.
HeSP was launched as a platform for collaboration between the World Bank and partner countries such as Cape Verde, Guinea and Liberia, with the support of WAHO and WSSO. Based on the One Health approach, the programme focuses on strengthening preparedness and response capacities through multisectoral cooperation and optimizing the investments of international partners.
During the event, the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE) had a prominent participation, represented by its Coordinator, Nuno Gomes, who presented the Activity Plan for 2024, referring to the Health Security Project in West and Central Africa, implemented by the UGPE.
The meeting provided a platform for the exchange of experiences between the countries, with a view to formulating recommendations that will speed up the implementation of the program, especially in the fight against antimicrobial resistance and the strengthening of health systems.
In addition to the UGPE, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Health, technicians from the West African Health Organization (WAHO), the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA), the World Bank and other international partners.
