Government holds workshop for concerted articulation on electricity sector restructuring

A workshop, promoted by the Government of Cape Verde, was held this Thursday, July 20, in which the results of the international consultancy on the restructuring of the Electricity sector were analyzed.

The opening ceremony of the workshop on the restructuring of the electricity sector was chaired by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro.

This workshop aims, in a clear and consistent way, to reflect on the recommendations of the international consultancy on the restructuring of the Electricity sector and to produce contributions for the implementation of this project with the national task force team, on the other hand, to support the definition of the next actions that are central to decision making at government level.

Also participating in this session were the World Bank as a partner of the Government and institutions that are linked to the electricity sector, namely ELECTRA, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy.

It should be noted that through Decree-Law No. 34/2022, the Government decided to restructure the electricity sector, splitting Electra into three companies: EPEC (Electricity Production Company), EDEC (Electricity Distribution Company) and ONSEC (National Electricity System Operator). The same Decree Law defines the steps and procedures for the demerger and operationalization of the three companies.

In order to implement this restructuring, an international consultancy was recruited to support the Government in the implementation of the new structure of the sector defined in the above-mentioned Decree-Law, which was in charge of CPCS, a management consulting firm specialized in infrastructure.
