REIUP project reinforced with new funding and extended deadline until 2030

The #Government approved, in the Council of Ministers, on January 22, 2026, new agreements for additional financing, donations, and subsidies under the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Public Services Project (REIUP), as well as the extension of the project’s implementation period until June 30, 2030.
The decision follows the agreements signed on January 8, 2026, and continues the project that began in January 2022, within the framework of cooperation between Cape Verde and the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group.
The REIUP aims to diversify the economy, increase energy production from renewable sources, improve the efficiency of the electricity sector, and promote universal access to electricity, contributing to reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and energy costs. With the financial reinforcement now approved, the Executive intends to expand the project’s activities and consolidate the structural reform of the energy sector.
The bill approves an additional financing agreement with the IDA in the amount of 9.9 million Special Drawing Rights, equivalent to approximately US$13.6 million.
Also approved are US$1.2 million in financing from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), as administrator of the Canada Clean Energy and Forest Climate Facility, a US$410,000 grant from the IBRD and the IDA, and an additional grant.
